You can make the same argument about China. They are producing so much Co2 its pushed the world past the point of no return. All the climate change policy in the world cant change anything because china took so long to begin addressing the issue. They started nearly a decade and a half later than they ought to. But yeah american datacenters are the problem here...

What you say is true about China and its global environmental impact. But, if you look at the net effect specifically of DeepSeek versus the net effect of Anthropic or OpenAI, where the investments are being made -- it's a different story.

this guy already has clout and tenure

In NZ we call it the walking school bus.

They are crime hotspots

I asked Gemini to list the 10 most popular holiday destinations in the US, and the 10 places with the highest crime. There's only 1 place in the intersection: New Orleans.

Highest violent crime rates:

Memphis, Tennessee: ~2,400–2,500 per 100k

St. Louis, Missouri: ~2,000–2,100 per 100k

Detroit, Michigan: ~1,700–2,000 per 100k

Little Rock, Arkansas: ~1,600–1,800 per 100k

Baltimore, Maryland: ~1,600–1,700 per 100k

Oakland, California: ~1,400–1,900 per 100k

New Orleans, Louisiana: ~1,600–1,700 per 100k

Birmingham, Alabama: ~1,600–1,700 per 100k

Milwaukee, Wisconsin: ~1,100–1,600 per 100k

Cleveland, Ohio: ~1,500–1,600 per 100k

Most popular holiday destinations:

New York City, New York

Orlando, Florida

Las Vegas, Nevada

Maui, Hawaii

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

San Francisco, California

Miami, Florida

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

New Orleans, Louisiana

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina/Tennessee

Why violent crime? I would've guessed most holiday-adjacent crime was some variation of theft.

That's fair, I hadn't noticed the word "violent" sneak into Gemini's answer (it wasn't there in my question).

Highest overall crime rates:

Memphis, Tennessee

Oakland, California

Portland, Oregon

Detroit, Michigan

Seattle, Washington

Denver, Colorado

Albuquerque, New Mexico

St. Louis, Missouri

Little Rock, Arkansas

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Many of the same places, it turns out, and now the overlap with popular holiday destinations has dropped from 1 to 0.

That's a terrible metric, because people going on a vacation probably aren't going there purposefully to commit crimes. What you want to do is look for increases in crime in a given place during holidays

https://coolidgelawfirmaz.com/crime-increase-over-the-holida...

Is that alone really a better metric? At least in Europe a lot of people travel during holidays, so there's less risk breaking into city flats because they're empty.

Its AGI when it can fit years of information in the context window.

>When Google implement an anti-user feature, Mozilla have to begrudgingly implement it

Why would ladybird be any different? The developer is not anti corporate and is closer ideologically to Google than Mozilla.

Passing tests and has abysmal performance on basic web features. Not to mention how many security issues are present. Its unserious to suggest it as an alternative at this stage. It make people think they dont have to support firefox because there is alternatives just around the corner.

nobody is suggesting that it is a viable alternative, i am just arguing that it is not imaginary science fiction either

Nothing Firefox has done is remotely comparable to chrome.

I treat firefox the same way I treat politics. If I am around people I know understand the importance of firefox and are commited to using it then we can talk about its problems. If I am around anyone else I wont say a bad word about firefox. Why would I say a negative thing about firefox to a google chrome user, any point they make is instantly undermined by their usage of google chrome. To sit there and talk badly about firefox just reinforces their resolve in choosing google chrome.

Plus I genuinely like firefox its a great browser and I dont feel bad telling people that its good.

Whats the point of paying for this report if they cant even be bothered to do it. Mistakes in a 425,000 government report are unacceptable. This is what we are basing years of policy off it needs to be rock solid information. In a sane world the NZ government would never contract them again.

Because these consultants are only hired to shift the blame and responsibility away from civil servants.

"It was not my fault, we were just following Deloitte advice!"

It always has been a waste of money

Wouldn’t be all that surprised if quality went up with the use of AI for this stuff.

The word “slop” is tossed around way too much, but these sorts of engagements are a perfect example of replacing low value human slop with computer generated slop.

Probably a net positive to society because a few interns at a consulting company got to spend a Friday night enjoying themselves vs. working on a BS report.

Yes, I might be slightly jaded. But I’m not certain I feel this is hyperbole either.

How could they tell the difference between an AI slop report and a standard Deloitte slop report?
