Sometimes standards are mostly arbitrary, and it doesn't matter which one "wins" as long as we all agree on one. However, it can also be frustrating when society adopts a standard nearly universally, and then that standard becomes an impediment when some new alternative comes along or some new use case is found that isn't supported by the old standard.
